Description
This famous location was featured in the movie "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", as a secret temple. That is actually what it was when rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johan Ludwig Burkhardt in 1812. It is located near Jordan and is carved into the sandstone cliffs and is also called the Rose Red City. This is another place on my Bucket List!

Hi Tom, I just love this! You've done a beautiful job painting this incredible place...a city carved from a mountain. I was there in 1974 on the Mid East tour of a lifetime. I was one of about 25 Americans from Camp Darby (home of the Mediterranean Division of the Army Corps of Engineers) in Livorno, Italy who went on the tour. We were trying to decide whether to move with the Corps to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for a nation building project. So someone had the great idea to put together a Mid East tour. I went; Petra was part of the tour. Our tour bus drove us from Amman to a deserted place on the side of the highway where horses awaited us. We rode into the mountains on horseback to the surprise of a lifetime. Go to Petra!
