Description
Milwaukee’s Rainbow Bridge
The bridge I depicted is the Hoan Memorial Bridge on Milwaukee’s lakefront where the Milwaukee River flows into lake Michigan. It has become a symbol of unity and civic pride.
The Hoan bridge project in Milwaukee on the lakefront was shut down in 1973 leaving the bridge with nothing at either end to connect with. Locals began to refer to it as the “Bridge to nowhere”. Finally in 1977, thanks to $22 million from the feds it was completed.
In 2020 a civic project raised 3.5 million dollars privately to install 2,600 LED lights in a rainbow of colors and an infinite variety of patterns. It is now a prominent feature for the city.
