These two globes are part of the collection displayed in my home (I even have a large standing globe with a fully stocked bar inside). My purpose in this painting was to focus on the lighting and to capture or suggest the intricate details of the old world maps. Whenever I see a globe of the world I always think of the Explorers Club of New York City. Founded n 1905, old photos show dark wood paneling, leather armchairs, elephant tusks, potted palm plants, plus walls with exotic trophies and American landscapes in ornate frames. I can imagine sipping a fine whiskey in one of those armchairs while listening to the explorers’ tales of faraway lands and harrowing adventures.
